摘要: Microalgae coagulation-flocculation is strongly influenced by dissolved extracellular organic matters (dEOM), yet the fundamental mechanisms through which dEOM participates in algae flocculation with different flocculant types remain unclear. This study employed ferric sulfate and cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) to treat three Chlorella vulgaris solutions: raw suspension, dEOM-removed suspension, and dEOM-reintroduced suspension. Interestingly, the results reveal contrasting dEOM effects depending on flocculant type: dEOM absence substantially reduced flocculation efficiency with ferric sulfate but enhanced performance with CPAM. Mechanistic investigations through solution and floc analysis suggested distinct dEOM roles in different flocculation systems not reported in previous studies. In ferric sulfate flocculation, Fe3+ primarily neutralized algal cell charges, while dEOM facilitated intercellular bridging via electrostatic attraction with oppositely charged Fe3+ ions absorbed on algal cells, enabling larger aggregate formation and enhanced efficiency. For CPAM flocculation, dEOM was not effectively removed, stabilizing algal cell dispersion by electrostatic repulsion and hindering isoelectric point attainment, whereas its removal eliminated repulsive forces and allowed synergistic mechanism of charge neutralization and polymer bridging. This work provides new insights into the differential roles of dEOM in flocculation mediated by different flocculants.
