摘要: Lepidoptera species, including both moths and butterflies, constitutes a major insect order with extensive biodiversity. A considerable proportion of these species are phytophagous pests, presenting substantial challenges to agricultural productivity. The sterile insect technique (SIT), as an integral component of area-wide integrated pest management (AW-IPM) programs, has been employed for the suppression, local eradication, or prevention of populations of economically important and invasive Lepidoptera pests. Recent advancements in insect developmental physiology, reproductive biology, and molecular genetics, particularly the application of CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technique across diverse agricultural pest species, have facilitated the development from traditional radiation-induced SIT (rSIT) to genetics-based SIT (gSIT). This innovation approach offers a strategic framework for genetic pest control and has been adopted in multiple pest management programs. This review delineates recent progress of rSIT for Lepidoptera pests control and details the current status of gSIT strategies, emphasizing target gene selection and application. Additionally, it evaluates the potential and limitations of SIT-based strategies for Lepidoptera pest management, providing a foundational perspective for future advancements in SIT within integrated pest management (IPM).
