摘要: Additives with electron transport properties, such as nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI), can regulate biochemical reactions and improve the efficiency of organic waste bioconversion during composting. However, the role and potential of nZVI in nitrogen retention during composting have not been thoroughly explored. In this study, Accordingly, four gradients (0, 2.5 %, 5 %, and 7.5 %) of nZVI were applied to a mixture of swine slurry (SS) and pulverized wolfberry branches (WB) for aerobic co-composting over a duration of 50 days. Compared to T1, the addition of nZVI noticeably enhanced cumulative NH3 and N2O emissions by 5.73 % - 76.19 % and 60-103.5 times, respectively. It also boosted CO2 and CH4 emissions by 50.8 %- 104.3 % and 127.6 %-150.6 %, respectively. PICRUSt 2 results revealed that nZVI addition elevated the relative abundance (RAD) of the narI gene by 34.65-131.13 % during the pre-composting stage, which promoted dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA). It also significantly increased the RAD of hao and pmoABC-amoABC genes (1.24 x10(-7) similar to 2.13 x10(-6)) in the maturation period of co-composting, elevating nitrification and led to a significant release of N2O. Compared to other additives used in the co-composting of organic waste as reported in the literature, nZVI addition significantly enhanced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and global warming potential (GWP) values. The findings of this study indicated that nZVI may not be a suitable additive for improving the co-composting of organic waste, particularly in terms of nitrogen retention and greenhouse gas mitigation.
