摘要: The utilization of biochar (BC) for the remediation of heavy metals (HMs) in contaminated soils has attracted considerable global interest. This review synthesizes advancements in the formation, composition, and fraction distribution of endogenous substances in BC, as well as their roles in regulating both cationic and anionic HMs in soils over the past decade (up to 2025). The physicochemical and structural properties of BC are determined by feedstock selection and pyrolysis temperature, which regulate the composition, concentration, and fractionation of its constituents. Notably, BC derived from agroforestry residues (AFW) and algae are abundant in organic functional groups, while that produced from municipal waste (MW) is enriched with inorganic mineral constituents. These endogenous substances play critical roles in HMs immobilization. For cationic HMs, BC effectively reduces their mobility and plant uptake through core mechanisms including ion exchange, chelation, co-precipitation, and electrostatic interactions. In the case of anionic HMs, BC mitigates mobility, bioavailability, and toxicity via pathways such as chelation, co-precipitation, and redox reactions. However, both competitive interactions with mineral nutrients (P/Si) and reductive dissolution of Fe/Mn oxides induced by BC-derived dissolved organic carbon (DOC) can enhance the solubility, mobility, and bioavailability of anionic HMs. Several challenges impede the large-scale application of BC in real-world scenarios, including variability in feedstock selection and pretreatment, lack of standardized pyrolysis protocols, and uncertainties regarding its long-term ecological and agronomic impacts. Future research should focus on the targeted optimization of endogenous substances for specific HMs and the implementation of field-scale investigations to evaluate long-term sustainability.
