摘要: Agricultural mulch films play a pivotal role in safeguarding global food security. Soil-biodegradable mulch (BDM) has been developed and is increasingly adopted to replace conventional polyethylene mulch (PM). The differential impacts of the different mulches on agronomic performance and environmental outcomes have yet to be systematically evaluated worldwide. The objective of this study was to evaluate the sustainability tradeoffs using PM and BDM in agriculture. Hence, we conducted a global meta-analysis synthesizing 4,331 experimental datasets from 724 publications to quantify these tradeoffs. The analysis revealed agricultural mulch films (BDM and PM) increased crop yields (27.72 % and 29.53 %, respectively) and water use efficiency (WUE; 20.28 % and 47.27 %, respectively), reduced CH4 emissions (31.68 % and 48.28 %, respectively), and increased N2O emissions (8.60 % and 24.03 %, respectively). BDM reduced global warming potential (18.27 %), whereas PM showed no significant reduction. Crop specific metrics were not different (yield, WUE, and greenhouse gases) between the two films except for grain and seed crops. Overall, BDMs exhibit climate-smart performance in temperate and humid zones with superior environmental benefits. The synchronization index of water conservation revealed BDM's higher potential for greenhouse gas mitigation and ecological benefits, demonstrating BDM as a tool for sustainable agriculture.
