摘要: Background: Rising demand for plant-based foods (PBF) has induced considerable waste throughout the agri-food supply chain, simultaneously, economic losses, potential risks to environment and food safety. Biochar, a carbon-rich material derived from waste biomass, has attracted increasing interests for its versatile functionality across multiple emerging applications. Scope and approach: This review systematically elucidates the origin and characteristics of different PBF wastes. The conversion of these wastes through three typical thermochemical methods– pyrolysis, torrefaction, and hydrothermal carbonization– are illustrated in details. Correspondingly, biochar produced through these processes and its characteristics are analyzed and compared across different studies. The multiple applications of biochar within agri-food systems are introduced, and its sustainability is discussed from the life cycle and techno-economic perspectives. Relevant policies and regulation are also summarized to provide a comprehensive overview of the development of biochar industry. Key findings and conclusions: Diverse PBF wastes have been converted into biochar, offering a sustainable upgrade over conventional disposal methods. However, variations in feedstock and conversion pathways lead to considerable heterogeneity in biochar properties. Because of its unique structural and functional characteristics, biochar demonstrates multifunctional applications. From crop production and livestock breeding to food processing and safety monitoring, biochar has exhibited excellent performance and presents a promising pathway toward green development in the agri-food sector. Technological innovation is essential to maximize the benefits of biochar, while comprehensive life cycle assessment and techno-economic analysis are needed to minimize environmental impacts and ensure economic feasibility. Furthermore, coordinated policy frameworks and international standardization will be crucial to expanding the application scope of the biochar industry.
