摘要: The potato tuber moth (PTM) Phthorimaea operculella is a key Lepidopteran pest of potato in fields and storages. Potato is one of the most important food crops playing a significant role in global food security in the world. In this study, we examined the non-consumptive effects of an ectoparasitic mite Pyemotes zhonghuajia on PTM development, growth, survival, and reproductive performances. We reveal that predatory cues from PTM larvae parasitised and killed by P. zhonghuajia mites accelerated the development of PTM eggs and larvae but reduced the egg hatching rate, larva pupation rate, and adult emergence rate. PTM larvae decreased food consumption when exposed to predation stress; however, the reduction of food consumption did not decrease pupa weight but rather increased female pupa weight. We show that heaver body weight of females did not directly result in greater female fecundity, and predation stress had little carry-over effect on other reproductive traits of females in the parental and offspring generations. We further detected certain significant negative transgenerational effects of predatory stress experienced in the parental generation on the immature development and survival and adult longevity of PTM in the offspring generation. Therefore, non-consumptive effects induced by the parasitised or killed PTM larvae by P. zhonghuajia may suppress the population size of PTM. These findings may deliver important information for the development of large-scale sustainable pest management of PTM using P. zhonghuajia mites in commercial potato storages.
