摘要: Water resources have become scarcer during the past decades with the population increasement and economic development in the world. Responding to the concerns about the unsustainable use of global freshwater resources, the concept of water footprint has recently been developed and applied to a wide range of researches. The water footprint, which shows the extent of water use in relation to consumption of people, provides useful information in addition to the traditional production-sector-based indicators of water use. The objectives of this study are to assess the water footprint of Beijing and the possible agricultural practices to reduce it. The water footprint and characteristics of agricultural water structure of Beijing are analyzed from 1990 to 2005. The study shows that the water footprint of Beijing increases from 81.5x10(8) m(3) in 1990 to 168.6x10(8) m(3) in 2005, which is from 750.1 m(3)/cap/yr to 1096.0 m(3)/cap/yr during the same period. The annual average agricultural water use accounts for 55.1% of the total local water consumption. The water use of water intensive crops have tremendously increased due to the increasing of planting area of the crops in 1990-2005. Drinking and service water use of livestock also grows along with the expanding of animal husbandry whereas the average annual virtual water import makes up 81.3% of the total virtual water of livestock production in 2001-2005. As a huge water user, agricultural sector has great potential to reduce the water footprint of Beijing. Improving agricultural water productivity by optimizing agricultural water structure could effectively reduce the water footprint of Beijing. Agricultural practices such as reducing the planting area of water intensive crops, expanding livestock production by taking advantage of virtual water import and adjusting the ratio of crops production to livestock production should be applied.
